Hello, my name is Marimar, and I’m going to talk about Walt Disney. I chose this person because I admire his creativity and imagination, I think he’s a genius, and I’m a big fan of his movies.
He’s real name is Walter Elias Disney, he was born on December 5, 1901 in Chicago, Illinois.
His father, Elias Disney, was an Irish-Canadian. His mother, Flora Call Disney, was a German-American. Walt was one of five children, 4 boys and a girl.
After Walt’s birth, the Disney family moved to Marceline Missouri, where Walt lived most of his childhood.
Walt became interested in drawing at an early age, selling his first sketches to neighbors when he was only 7 years old.
Walt began taking courses at the Chicago Art Institute and became the cartoonist for the school newspaper.
After World War I, Walt moved to Kansas City, where he began his career as an advertising cartoonist. In 1920, he created and marketed his first original animated cartoons, and later a new method for combining live-action and animation.
3 years later, Walt Disney left Kansas City for Hollywood. His brother, Roy was already in California. They constructed a camera stand in their uncle’s garage. Disney brothers’ studio was born.
On July 13, 1925, Walt married one of his first employees, Lillian Bounds, in Lewiston, Idaho. They had 2 daughters: Diane Marie and one year later they adopted Sharon Mae.
He received fifty-nine Academy Award nominations and won twenty-six Oscars, including a record four in one year. He holds the record for an individual with the most awards and the most nominations. He won seven Emmy Awards. Walt Disney's personal awards included honorary degrees from Harvard, Yale, the University of Southern California and UCLA; the Presidential Medal of Freedom; France's Legion of Honor and Officer d'Academie decorations; Thailand's Order of the Crown; Brazil's Order of the Southern Cross; Mexico's Order of the Aztec Eagle; and the Showman of the World Award from the National Association of Theatre Owners.
In 1932, he received his first of 32 Oscars, for the creation of Mickey Mouse.
“Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” was his first full-length animation film (1937) and the most successful. The film produced at the unheard cost of $1,499,000 during the depths of the Depression, the film is still considered one of the great feats and imperishable monuments of the motion picture industry.
Then came “Pinocchio”, “Fantasia”, “Dumbo”, “Bambi”, “Peter Pan” and Cinderella.
Soon after the war, Disney came up with the idea for a theme-based amusement park. Disneyland, in California opened on July 17, 1955.
Walt also became a television pioneer, Disney began television production in 1954, and was among the first to present full-color programming with his Wonderful World of Color in 1961.
In 1964, Walt Disney Productions began purchasing land southwest of Orlando, Florida for what was called the "Florida Project".
After many years smoking cigarettes, Walt was diagnosed with lung cancer. He died on November 30, 1966 when he was 65 years old. He was cremated and his ashes reside at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.
Roy Disney, Walt brother, continued with the “Florida Project” but he changed the name to Walt Disney World in honor to his brother.
Surprising facts.
Disney's death spawned two rumors that have become urban legends. The first is that he had his body cryogenically frozen. The second held that he was buried somewhere on the grounds of Disneyland.
