Bill Gates

Hello everybody, my name’s Myanh Pham.

My American figure is Bill Gates, a CEO of Microsoft company. I chose him for my presentation because I like his characteristics. He earns a lot of money but he didn’t keep it for himself, he gave his money back to poor people, helped them to find better lives.

William Henry Gates III was born on October 28, 1955. He grew up in Seattle, Washington with his parents and two sisters. His family have a rich history in business, politics, and community service. His grandfather was the vice president of a national bank. His father was a prominent Seattle attorney, and his mother was a former school teacher.

From childhood Bill was an ambitious, intelligent and competitive boy. He knew the whole encyclopedia when he was 10. Bill Gates liked reading histories of the famous people such as Napoleon, Franklin Roosevelt and the Business Week Magazine of his father. His parents decided to enroll him in Lakeside school, a private school known for its intense academic environment. It was a very important decision in Bill Gate's life where he was first introduced to a computer. In this school, he met Paul Allen, a close friend with similar interests in technology and then after eventually become his business partner. Bill Gates and Allen started to develop a small computer to measure traffic flow and they earned around $20,000 from this project.

In 1973, he went to Harvard University. He didn’t know what to do, so he enrolled his in pre-law. He did well over there, but he couldn’t find it interesting, his heart was not on his studying. He spent many long nights in front of the computer for programming and the next day asleep in class. Finally, Bill Gates dropped out from Harvard to catch his dream in business. Then he and his friend Paul Allen formed Microsoft in 1975, it is the largest Computer software company that makes him become the richest business person in the world. The target of this company is "A computer on every desk and Microsoft software on every computer". And his hard working has put him to where he is today.

In 1995, Bill Gates wrote “The road ahead”, it became the best seller at that time and published in over 20 countries.

He married Melinda French, a Microsoft manager and they had three children. He now lives with his family in a house overlooking Lake Washington in Medina, Washington.
Melinda Gates also had an enthusiasm in charity like her husband. So they formed the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation in 2000, it was the largest charitable foundation in the world. The purposes of the foundation are to enhance healthcare, especial on preventing malaria and AIDS in poor countries and reduce poverty and to expand educational opportunities by many scholarships. They had given more than 20 billion dollars for this foundation. Gates plans to give away 95% of all his earnings when he is old.

Interesting things about him is he told his teachers in The Harvard that he would be a millionaire by the time he was 30, this was one of the few times he underestimated himself, Bill was a billionaire when he was 31.

To me, behind the success, Bill is a talented and hard working man with deep passion, a person who can leave the Harvard to follow the dream of his life and also a great philanthropist.
